Transparent images

Transparent images are images that don't have a background.

Occasionally you may need to use an image on your website that has a transparent background (for instance a logo).

Sometimes, an image might appear not to have a background but actually the background is white, but this is quite different to a transparent image where there is no background at all.

In order to have a transparent background an image can't be a jpeg image. So if your image is saved as a JPG or JPEG then it won't be transparent. Transparent images are either PNG or GIF.

Consider the image example below

At first glance it might appear to have no background. But look what happens when you place the image ontop of a black background

You can see that actually it has a white background.

If the image did have a transparent background then it would end up looking like this.

If you want to convert an image that has a background into one that doesn't have a background, there are a number of different tools that you can use. But it can be difficult (depending on the type of background that the image has).

If you search for 'make an image transparent' or something similar on Google, you should be able to find a method that suits your computer skills and the software that you have available to you.
