Selling on Instagram
You can sell your products on Instagram by tagging them when they appear in posts you place on your Instagram account.
Customers who find these tagged products can then tap a link to view and buy a product in your online store, as shown in the example below.
To use this Instagram feature, you'll need to meet the following requirements (these are set out by Instagram)
- You'll need to be located within the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Italy or Brazil
- Your Instagram account must be converted to a business profile
- Your business profile must be connected to a Facebook catalog (explained below)
- You'll need to make sure you're using the latest version of the Instagram app on your smart phone or tablet
- Your business must sell physical products that comply with Instagram's policies, merchant agreement and commerce policy
After approval you'll be able to turn on product tagging through your Instagram settings.
Creating a Facebook catalog
There is a known bug on the Facebook system (not a fault with our platform) where some users experience no response from the Facebook website during the feed upload process. Please see https://www.facebook.com/business/help/community/question/?id=10154603574102360 for further details (with information on how to report the issue to Facebook support). Alternatively you can try the process from the beginning.
Facebook accept the data about products in a number of different formats.
Our recommendation is to use the Google Feed app, which will generate an XML feed of your products which updates automatically every 24 hours with the latest product information. Facebook accept the format of the XML feed that the Google Feed app creates within your account.
If you don't already have the app installed, select 'apps and extensions' from the left menu of your account and then 'available applications', find the Google Feed app and click to install it.
Go to Business Manager (if you don't already have an account then you'll need to create one).
Select 'business manager' from the top menu and then 'catalogues' from the 'assets' column (as shown in the screenshot below).
On the next page, click the 'create catalog' button and then select the 'ecommerce' option and click 'next'.
In the 'catalog name' field you can enter any name for the catalog that will help you identify it later.
Once the catalogue has been created you can click the 'add products' button to proceed with setting up the feed.
On the next screen, in the first field you'll need to enter the URL of your Google Feed. This can be obtained within your account. Follow the instructions here under the section 'obtaining the URL for your feed'. If you want to manually select the products that are included in the feed then follow the instructions in the 'selecting the products for your feed' section.
The Google Feed is not password protected by default but you can set one for the feed if you want to (to do so select 'feeds' from the left menu of your account and then 'feed urls' - enter a username and password at the top of the page and click save and then at the bottom of the page tick the box to password protect the Google Feed).
The Google Feed updates once per day so you can either tell Facebook to fetch the data from it daily or weekly (our recommendation is to select daily).
Give the feed a name you will recognise later on (there's no specific requirement about what name you should enter) and select the default currency according to the currency of your website.
Once complete select the button to continue to the next step and you'll see a message that your feed is processing.
Once complete you can click the 'view products' button to check that your products uploaded successfully.
Make sure your account conforms to the other eligibility requirements listed at the top of this page and await a notification from Instagram that your account has been approved for product tagging.
