The correct categorisation of your items is essential to ensure that visitors to your website can find the products that they are looking for quickly and easily. It helps them to not only be able to identify a specific product that they are looking for, but also find similar products or browse through products (which can increase impulse purchases on your website).


Correct categorisation of your items is completed in a few steps:

  1. Planning your category structure
  2. Creating the appropriate categories on your website
  3. Placing your items in the correct categories
Important!

We'd advise that if you have a large number of products/categories, that you plan your category structure and create your categories before adding any products to your website.

Categories can have more than one level, so that customers can 'drill down' to find the product they are looking for, e.g.

Stationery
Writing
Pens

In this example 'Stationery', 'Writing' and 'Pens' are all categories.

Only 'Pens' actually contains products, the other two categories just help the user find what they are looking for.


Brands

Another type of categorisation of products is called Brands. Brands are a different way to categorise products, e.g. on a clothing shop you might have 'Gucci', 'Versace', 'Armani'. Brands are managed separately to categories, you can read about them here.
