Creating SPF and DKIM DNS records

The guide below describes how to create SPF and DKIM DNS records on your domain name in order to verify your sending domain name with our email sending service Mandrill.

Select 'your account' from the left menu and then 'domain name'.

Scroll down to the 'your live domain name' section

You'll need to open a separate browser window and login to your online account with your domain name provider (i.e. who you registered the domain name with).

Within your domain name account locate the section where you enter/change the DNS settings for the domain name.

Adding a DKIM record

To add a DKIM record you'll need to click to create a new TXT record on your domain name's DNS records.

Go back to your website account and click the 'view DKIM settings' link which will open a new window.

You can see in the above that the TXT record name needs to be

mandrill._domainkey.yourdomainname.com

(substituting yourdomainname.com with whatever your actual domain name is).

So in the 'host name'/'host' field in your domain name account you should enter

mandrill._domainkey

Important: Make sure you don't create a TXT record with your domain name in the hostname/host field

For the 'points to'/'destination'/'target'/'value' field you should enter the TXT record value shown above, i.e.

v=DKIM1; k=rsa; p=MIGfMA0GCSqGSIb3DQEBAQUAA4GNADCBiQKBgQCrLHiExVd55zd/IQ/J/mRwSRMAocV/hMB3jXwaHH36d9NaVynQFYV8NaWi69c1veUtRzGt7yAioXqLj7Z4TeEUoOLgrKsn8YnckGs9i3B3tVFB+Ch/4mPhXWiNfNdynHWBcPcbJ8kjEQ2U8y78dHZj1YeRXXVvWob2OaKynO8/lQIDAQAB;

Then click the 'save' or 'apply' button in your domain name account.

That's the DKIM record added.

Adding an SPF record

To add an SPF record you'll need to create a new TXT record on your domain name's DNS records.

Go back to your website account and click the 'view SPF settings' link which will open a new window.

In your domain name account you should leave the 'host name'/'host' field blank or enter @.

For the 'points to'/'destination'/'target'/'value' field you should enter the TXT record value shown above, i.e.

v=spf1 include:spf.mandrillapp.com ?all

You may already have an SPF record setup which looks similar to the above. If you do, enter include:spf.mandrillapp.com before the final ?all bit.

Then click the 'save' or 'apply' button in your domain name account.

That's the SPF record added.

Verifying the changes

DNS changes can take a while to 'propagate' across the internet so we'd advise you to leave it for around 2 hours before checking whether it has worked or not. You can check whether the changes have worked by clicking the 'verify' button (as shown on the screenshot below).

If the DNS settings have been successfully applied then the section will disappear.

If it still indicates a problem then you shoudl wait for up to 6 hours before checking again. If after 6 hours you still encounter a problem please contact us for assistance.
